Choosing between a Stage 1 and Stage 2 remap is one of the most common questions we get. Here’s everything you need to know to make the right decision for your car and budget.
What Is a Stage 1 Remap?
A Stage 1 remap is a software-only tune on a completely standard engine. No hardware modifications needed. We read your ECU, adjust the calibration, and write it back with optimised settings.
- Cost: £180 at MapKings
- Power gains: Typically +20-40% more power and torque
- Hardware required: None
- Reversible: Yes — we can revert to stock at any time
- Suitable for: Daily drivers who want more performance without any modifications
What Is a Stage 2 Remap?
A Stage 2 remap is calibrated for cars with supporting hardware modifications. Common Stage 2 mods include a performance downpipe, upgraded intercooler, cold air intake, or decat pipe.
- Cost: £200 at MapKings
- Power gains: Typically +40-60% more power and torque
- Hardware required: Downpipe, intercooler, intake, or similar
- Reversible: Yes, but hardware mods would need to be removed separately
- Suitable for: Enthusiasts who’ve already invested in bolt-on modifications
Which Should You Choose?
Go Stage 1 if: Your car is completely standard, you want a noticeable improvement without spending money on parts, or you’re leasing the car and want a reversible upgrade.
Go Stage 2 if: You’ve already fitted a downpipe, intercooler, or intake. A Stage 2 tune will maximise the benefit of those mods. Without the hardware, a Stage 2 map on a standard car can actually cause problems.
Can You Go Straight to Stage 2?
Not without the hardware. A Stage 2 calibration expects increased airflow and cooling. Running it on a standard engine can cause excessive exhaust gas temperatures, boost spikes, or limp mode. Always fit the hardware first, then get the tune.
What About Stage 3?
Stage 3 is for fully built engines — hybrid turbos, upgraded fuelling, forged internals. This is a serious performance build and pricing is on application. Most road cars will never need Stage 3.
